SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech), located 15 miles northeast of Seattle, is the only public institute of technology in Washington state and has provided high quality education since 1949. We offer 10 applied bachelor's degrees, 43 associate degrees and 91 professional certificates in 42 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The sign language interpreter provides interpreting and support services to Deaf and hearing impaired students attending Lake Washington Institute of Technology; facilitates communication between the students and their instructors, peers, and other personnel in the college; interprets non-technical and technical lectures and classroom presentations. Other typical duties, when not providing interpreting, include taking part in meetings as required by student services or the instructional program, working closely with counselors and other student services staff to provide interpreting services to enrolled students, and maintaining close communication with the staff to monitor any daily or weekly changes in interpreter scheduling. This is a temporary, part-time, hourly position that reports to the director of student development or designee.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Provide expressive and voice or oral interpreting for Deaf and hearing impaired students in professional-technical courses and academic classes, extra-curricular events, and meetings
  • Assist faculty to meet the needs of Deaf students in the classroom; communicate assignment instructions and other information from the faculty to the Deaf student
  • Convey intent as well as spoken words when interpreting
  • Use reverse interpretation, relaying questions and contributions from Deaf students back to the faculty
  • Encourage Deaf students to use standard signs
  • May assist in scheduling other interpreters
  • Regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality
  • Perform related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS


  • Associate's degree or higher in ASL/ITP; Bachelor's degree preferred
  • One to three years work experience in sign language interpretation required; over three years work experience preferred
  • Current ASL certification
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with diverse student populations and work environments
  • Experience within the technical or community college and/or educational setting preferred

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION


Placement on the interpreter hourly schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. The hourly rate schedule is as followed:

Step I ranges from $36.97-44.39
Step II ranges from $51.81-59.19
Step III ranges from $59.19-66.61

CORRECTIONS OR EXTENDED NOTICES

Hourly/temporary employees are eligible for benefits if they work an average of at least 80 hours per month and work for at least 8 hours in each month for more than 6 consecutive months. Sick leave accures at 1 hour for every 40 hours worked.
