COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE

This work unit manages the fishery resources of the Southwest Region of Colorado, in the San Juan and Upper Dolores River Basins, by performing aquatic resource inventories, setting fishing regulations, collaborating with interested internal and external customers, developing an annual fish stocking schedule, monitoring water quality and quantity, and evaluating and enhancing fish habitat resources.
Description of Job
This position exists to formulate, implement, and evaluate fisheries management strategies and goals within Area 15 by collecting and analyzing data, applying fisheries and wildlife principles, and collaborating with other professionals within and outside of the agency.
Collect Biological, Physical and Chemical Data to Manage Aquatic Species
Collect biological, physical, and chemical data by conducting lake and stream fishery surveys. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of fishery management strategies by designing and conducting angler creel surveys. Implement and monitor the effectiveness of stream and lake habitat improvement projects. Data are collected to manage sportfish and native fish populations in Area 15.
Interpret, Identify and Solve Problems in Fishery Management
Preserve and enhance fishery resources by interpreting data, identifying and solving problems, and making decisions about stream and lake management practices.
Internal and External Agency Coordination
Advises and confers with CPW personnel, other state agencies, water managers, federal wildlife and land management agencies, Native American Tribes, and the public on fisheries-related matters by disseminating, explaining, and instructing to inform, negotiate and/or gain support.
Implements Approved Annual Work Plan
Implements the approved annual work plan by executing the work items contained within the plan. Interviews, hires, and supervises temporary employees and volunteers. Sets work priorities, schedules, and job completion criteria to conform to a standard of high quality and performance.
Administrative Functions
Accounts for resources by communicating with supervisor regarding expenditures for operations, travel, capital items, temporary and contractual personnel.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
Six (6) years of relevant experience in aquatic or fishery or wildlife biology, aquatic or fishery or wildlife management, aquatic or fishery wildlife research or an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.
OR
A combination of related education in Aquatic Biology, Fishery Biology, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Biology, or General Biology with course emphasis in aquatic, conservation, fishery, or wildlife biologyand/or relevant experience in an occupation
related to the work assigned equal to six (6) years
Substitutions
* Additional appropriate education will substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
* Current or former state or federal relevant to this position
* Current or former wildlife agency work or volunteer experience (preferably with CPW)
* Professional level writing, research and communication development skills
* Master's degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, conservation biology, or similar degree
* Experience with or education specific to native aquatic species conservation work
* Experience with or education specific to Western Colorado native fish species
* Experience with the San Juan Basin Recovery Program
* Experience with or education specific to sportfish management, including but not limited to management of coldwater and coolwater/warmwater fisheries in a wide variety of habitats including lakes, reservoirs, streams, and rivers
Required Competencies
* Strong written skills with an understanding of legal and regulatory concepts and language
* Excellent organizational and time management skills
* Being able to work independently
Conditions of Employment
* Must be a current Colorado resident at the time of application
* Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license if operating a State vehicle.
* Exposure to rotenone and potassium permanganate during normal use and application of piscicides at chemical reclamation projects.
* Travel is required for this position, including travel to remote field site visits and meetings.
* Required to acquire a Qualified Supervisor Pesticide Applicator License with aquatic designation in the first three years of employment.
* Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify their application from the current position.
