In December 2002 the team returned to local ownership for the first time since 1963. Are you passionate about elevating performance through mental resilience and well-being? We’re looking for a Director of Mind Health & Wellness to design and lead programming that supports players’ mental and emotional well-being, helping them perform at their best. Beyond working with the players, you’ll collaborate with basketball operations and key affiliates to integrate wellness strategies across the organization. This position will report to the Vice President of Organizational Growth & Team Operations. Responsibilities : Provide players with individual consultation (virtually or in person) with tools to enhance their psychological performance on and off the court. Work collaboratively with Player Enhancement Lead Coach as well as Performance staff to identify opportunities for collaboration to enhance player performance in practice and pre-game routine. Develop psychologically-minded onboarding processes and relationships for incoming players to support their acclimation to the team and organizational culture. Provide mental health/mental skills support to players experiencing the stress-response to injury and pursuit of return to competition. Long-term injury management support to help players cope with any psychological challenges/behaviors that arise during their rehabilitation. Facilitate coaching education opportunities utilizing theories of sport psychology and performance excellence in support of player development and skill acquisition. Development and curation of resources for on-demand access covering topics associated with mental health and mental skills content accessible to players, coaches, and staff. Manage mental health crisis involving players and staff that warrants the activation of the Emergency Action Plan (EAP). Develop and deliver mental health/mental skills educational sessions to players as part of their transition programming and onboarding. Assist with player transition out of the organization and coordinate confidential external referrals to appropriate mental health providers upon their exit from the team. Participate in regular meetings with the performance team, medical, player development, and coaching staff to provide education and strategies on how to support mental health and wellbeing of players. Facilitate communication involving mental health and wellness needs/resources between Maine & Boston organizations. Travel full-time with team over the course of the NBA season including nights, weekends, and holidays as well as NBA Summer League during the month of July each year. Preferred Qualifications: Experience providing applied sport psychology or clinical mental health services in a collegiate or professional sports environment. Experience in working with elite athletes at the collegiate or professional level. Trained or experienced in providing mental performance services to athletes or individuals in high-performance populations (e.g., military, performing artists). Credentialed as a CMPC through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. (The CMPC certification program is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.) Required Qualifications: Master’s or Doctoral degree in Sport/Clinical Psychology, Counseling or related field. Licensed to practice independently in the team’s home market/locality as a psychiatrist, psychologist, professional counselor, or related, in good standing with state licensing boards. Experience working with late adolescent and adult populations, including culturally and diagnostically diverse groups. Experienced in providing educational presentations and workshops to groups. Strong ability to provide clinical services in nontraditional settings while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries. Proven track record of effective collaboration with players, coaches, and support staff in high-performance and fast pace environments. Cognizant of the impact of sociocultural identity and context on mental health symptoms. Capable of providing clinical services in a nontraditional setting while maintaining confidentiality and appropriate clinical boundaries. Capable of clinical flexibility and demonstrating good skills and instincts while working in a complex and high-profile administrative system. Capable of facilitating an appropriate referral for medication evaluation and for specialty clinical services (e.g., more intensive treatment, substance use, couples therapy) as needed.
