Description

The City of Goleta invites applications for the position of Library Assistant on the Isla Vista Bookvan. The Bookvan operates Monday through Friday with stops throughout the Isla Vista area. The Bookvan provides library services to the wider Isla Vista community with the delivery of books, audiovisual materials, Library of Things items, technology, craft kits for kids, Honor System books, free books, and more.

The Library Assistant position on the Bookvan is responsible for driving the vehicle to and from scheduled stops. This position works with a Bookvan Department Aide to set up offsite service in an outdoor environment, to support patron browsing and circulation, register new users for library cards, and provide general library assistance. Participation at special events throughout the year may include passive or active seasonal programming.

This position requires possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record. Bilingual English/Spanish abilities highly desired but not required for this position.

This position is scheduled at 15 hours per week for the following days and times:


Mondays 11:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Tuesdays 12:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Wednesdays 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.
DEFINITION
To perform a wide variety of technical and clerical library work including cataloging and circulating material for a specific function of the library; to perform technical and clerical work in support of various sections of the library; and to provide general information and assistance to library patrons.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class of the Library Assistant series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

Examples of Duties

  • Provide exemplary customer service to all individuals by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous and respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
  • Check out library materials to patrons, check in and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection, register new patrons, collect overdue fines.
  • Respond to patron in-person and telephone requests for library materials, services and information, assist patrons in completing requests for materials not available in the local collection.
  • Process items received on loan including the creation and deletion of temporary catalog records in online circulation system, may process interlibrary loan requests.
  • Input data into library computer systems, make corrections, add or delete entries on bibliographic records, correct author and subject entries, search for missing books as necessary.
  • Monitor overdue loans, prepare special billings, receive, deposit and post money from patrons for fees owed to the library.
  • Perform general clerical work, type a variety of documents, answer phones, enter information into computer, maintain files and records; process and distribute the mail.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer, typewriter, telephone system, cash register, copy machine, facsimile machine and other related equipment.
  • Assist in monitoring, ordering and receiving supplies, maintain files of equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in the preparation and maintenance of displays and exhibits, assist with seasonal and ongoing programs and activities.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:
  • One year of general clerical experience.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
Ability to:
  • Learn basic library services and functions.
  • Learn library terminology.
  • Type at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Vision: Vision sufficient to read small print, computer screens, and printed documents, and to operate assigned equipment.
  • Hearing: Incumbents are required to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
  • Environment: Library environment; work closely with the public; work with computer and office equipment.
  • Other factors: Incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Incumbents may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings and to use a personal vehicle in the course of employment.

9/80 WORK SCHEDULE: Optional.
HOLIDAYS: 13 fixed holidays, one floating holiday.
VACATION: 10 days per year, accrued; increasing with City service.
SICK LEAVE: 12 days per year, accrued
BENEFIT PLAN: The City provides a monthly Flexible Benefit Plan allowance of $1,398.34 for the payment of health, dental, and vision insurance premiums through the City's benefit program. Partial cash out available for employees with qualified coverage elsewhere.
LIFE INSURANCE: Premium paid by City.
RETIREMENT PLAN: The City participates in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) and does not participate in Social Security. New PERS members receive the 2% at age 62, average of 3 years' final compensation benefit level and contribute 6.25% of their salary to pension costs. Classic members receive the 2% at age 55, single-highest year benefit formula and pay 7.00% of their salary toward pension costs

DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Employee-paid 457 Plan is available.
FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT PROGRAMS: Employee-paid Flexible Spending Account Programs for medical and dependent care expenses are available.
